Description:	The Third International Workshop on Data Intensive Distributed Computing (DIDC'10) will be held in conjunction with the 19th International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC'10), in Chicago, Illinois. The data needs of scientific as well as commercial applications from a diverse range of fields have been increasing exponentially over the recent years. This increase in the demand for large-scale data processing has necessitated collaboration and sharing of data collections among the world's leading education, research, and industrial institutions and use of distributed resources owned by collaborating parties. In a widely distributed environment, data is often not locally accessible and has thus to be remotely retrieved and stored. While traditional distributed systems work well for computation that requires limited data handling, they may fail in unexpected ways when the computation accesses, creates, and moves large amounts of data especially over wide-area networks. Further, data accessed and created is often poorly described, lacking both metadata and provenance. Scientists, researchers, and application developers are often forced to solve basic data-handling issues, such as physically locating data, how to access it, and/or how to move it to visualization and/or compute resources for further analysis. This workshop will focus on the challenges imposed by data-intensive applications on distributed systems, and on the different state-of-the-art solutions proposed to overcome these challenges. It will bring together the collaborative and distributed computing community and the data management community in an effort to generate productive conversations on the planning, management, and scheduling of data handling tasks and data storage resources. Having nowadays a positive impact on the healthcare service provisioning, WST has emerged and developed as an implementation of SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture). This ‘service orientation’ in turn relates to significant new possibilities for building (through service composition) powerful automated intelligent systems that adequately support sophisticated healthcare processes. These developments are further facilitated by the reduction in both the cost and size of medical equipment. Relevant technological trends concern increasingly pervasive sensing networks, higher processing power, and the ability to transfer data more quickly through both wired and wireless systems. Thus, particularly driven by this research focus, we are interested in the development and use of e-Health services as well as in their related technologies. Such services could actually be executed by ICT applications, being provided on a global scale, through distributed computing environments. e-Health services could therefore bring huge support to medical doctors and nurses, by allowing them, for example, to realize 24-7 remote monitoring of the vital signs of a patient. Such useful improvements could make care provisioning more accessible to broad societal circles – healthcare cost would go down if human healthcare workers are (partially) substituted by automated systems. However, all those impressive technological developments are only part of whole picture. It is to be taken into account that in spite these amazing developments and related large investments, we do not benefit to date from a smooth and commercially viable e-Health service provisioning. Furthermore, the development of e-Health services is currently slowing down, obviously because of the lack of a proper projection of the e-Health solutions in the real life. Hence, it is currently observed how e-Health moves to the phase of ‘disillusionment’ and this is an indication that we need to learn from the experience and be able to better utilize and adopt the advanced ICT for the benefit of health-care. ICEHST 2010 main focus is on e-Health services and their related technologies, with a particular stress on the modeling of complex e-Health technology-driven service-provisioning systems. The target of ICEHST is to address the fundamental modeling challenges related to e-Health services. In approaching such services though, we are mainly concerned with Tele-Monitoring and Tele-Treatment, as two essential directions of supporting healthcare through advanced technology. By Tele-Monitoring we mean the monitoring of the patient’s condition (including the monitoring of vital signs, such as blood pressure and blood sugar), supported by technology systems. By Tele-Treatment we mean performing some forms of treatment from distance, for example through actuators. These research directions essentially concern the Mobility aspect since both Tele-Monitoring and Tele-Treatment are realized from distance, through advanced mobile devices. There are open questions however, concerning the reliability of mobile technology ‘any time any place’, the operation of devices and batteries in ‘real’ conditions, and so on. The mentioned Mobility aspect points as well to the desired capability of (e-Health) systems to adequately react on changes in their environment, referred to as context awareness. We therefore acknowledge that technology-driven healthcare systems could only be really useful if they are context-aware. Finally, even though current technology helps in offering powerful support, providing the patient with complex and constant healthcare services (while keeping him/her in his/her own environment), there are important related concern, such as security and privacy, which need to be addressed also, since providing powerful (remote) support to patients would only make adequate value if patients’ data is treated in a secure and privacy-sensitive way. The goal of ICEHST is therefore to address the fundamental modeling challenges related to e-Health services and technologies. We believe that this event will contribute to the dissemination of relevant research results, supporting in this way the wider applicability of advanced technology in healthcare. Description:	The Third International Workshop on Data Intensive Distributed Computing (DIDC'10) will be held in conjunction with the 19th International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC'10), in Chicago, Illinois. The data needs of scientific as well as commercial applications from a diverse range of fields have been increasing exponentially over the recent years. This increase in the demand for large-scale data processing has necessitated collaboration and sharing of data collections among the world's leading education, research, and industrial institutions and use of distributed resources owned by collaborating parties. In a widely distributed environment, data is often not locally accessible and has thus to be remotely retrieved and stored. While traditional distributed systems work well for computation that requires limited data handling, they may fail in unexpected ways when the computation accesses, creates, and moves large amounts of data especially over wide-area networks. Further, data accessed and created is often poorly described, lacking both metadata and provenance. Scientists, researchers, and application developers are often forced to solve basic data-handling issues, such as physically locating data, how to access it, and/or how to move it to visualization and/or compute resources for further analysis. Description:	The proposed conference on the above theme will be held at the London Metropolitan Business School, London Metropolitan University, UK from August 4-6, 2010 which aims to enable researchers build connections between different digital applications. Currently, a number of institutions across the countries are working to evolve better models to provide collaborative technology services for scholarship by creating shared cyberspace thro expert collaboration, but this is a challenge for the institutions for a number of reasons. In the last few years, the landscape of digital technology applications projects for the various disciplines in humanities, social sciences, and sciences appears induced by many initiatives. For the creation of research clusters, the research community has thousands of databases, websites, local computing clusters, and web-based tools around individual themes, interests and projects. In most cases, these tools and resources are and were created to meet the specific needs of a particular community. In many cases, the funding and support for these critical initiatives is fragile and temporary, and directed in piecemeal fashion. There is a need to provide concerted efforts in building federated digital technologies that will enable the formation of network of digital technologies

Description:	Signal, Image and Video Processing Journal (Springer publishing) seeks original manuscripts for a Special Issue on "Unconstrained Biometrics: Advances and Trends", scheduled to appear in the first issue of 2011. Some of the biological traits used to perform biometric recognition support contactless data acquisition and can be imaged covertly. Thus, at least theoretically, the subsequent biometric recognition procedure can be performed without subjects’ knowledge and in uncontrolled scenarios. The feasibility of this type of recognition has received increasing attention and is of particular interest in visual surveillance, computer forensics, threat assessment, and other security areas. Though a growing number of researchers are concerned about the development of biometric recognition systems that operate in unconstrained conditions, many problems remain to be solved: how to deal with varying illumination sources, variations in poses and distances or blurred and low quality data resultant of such acquisition conditions. The proposal of techniques effective in such challenging situations requires vigorous research efforts. This special issue is particularly interested in emerging strategies to perform biometric recognition under uncontrolled data acquisition conditions, ideally fully covert ones.
