Position
Mathijs M. de Weerdt is an Assistant Professor within the Algorithmics Group of the TU Delft, Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI), Department of Software Technology, and Scientific Staff Member with the theme group on Computational Intelligence and Multi-agent Games of the national research institute for Mathematics and Computer Science.
Research interests
My current work is all related to dynamic mechanism design for planning and scheduling.
For example, moving towards sustainable energy, the production costs of electricity become dependent upon the weather. Users planning electricity-consuming activities have individual objectives that are different from those of electricity generators. As a society we are interested in a pricing scheme for electricity with an equilibrium for electricity consumption and production that optimizes the social welfare. The design of such a mechanism is an example of mechanism design in a dynamic setting involving planning and scheduling of activities. The focus of his research thus in fact is a synthesis of the research areas of algorithm design and game theory.
In my research, I contribute to two important practical problem domains: that of energy, realized by a strong cooperation in the context of Smart Grids with the group Electrical Power Systems, and that of transportation, building upon the considerable expertise and contacts in our research group. Together with my PhD student Leon Planken we study the temporal aspects of such problems.
Key publications
An overview of multiagent planning techniques can be found in Introduction to Planning in Multiagent Systems (preprint). Multiagent and Grid Systems An International Journal 5(4):345-355, 2009.
A comparison between a multiagent planning approach and a mathematical approach to a transportation problem is given in Can agents measure up? A comparative study of an agent-based and on-line optimization approach for a drayage problem with uncertainty (preprint). Transportation Research: Part C 18(1):99-119, 2010.
An efficient mechanism for multi-issue bilateral negotiation with multiple parties is introduced in Qualitative One-to-Many Multi-Issue Negotiation: Approximating the QVA (preprint). Group Decision and Negotiation, 2010.
An overview of the work in our group on (context-aware) routing is given in Dealing with Uncertainty in Operational Transport Planning (preprint). In R.R. Negenborn and Z. Lukszo and H. Hellendoorn (Eds.) Intelligent Infrastructures, Ch. 14, pp. 355-382. Springer, 2010.

Often I receive emails with requests for internships. Unfortunately, in our group there is only a very limited opportunity for such internships. I therefore tend to react only to requests that give a clear reason for requesting a position in this group, or requests that include a concrete proposal of what you would like to work on in our group.
